US-based Applied Materials said it plans to build a collaborative engineering centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka, with a focus on developing and commercializing technologies for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

According to the company's statement, The centre will serve as a hub where Applied engineers, leading global and domestic suppliers, and prestigious research and academic institutions can come together to work towards a common goal: accelerating the development of semiconductor equipment sub-systems and components.

The centre also aims to contribute to the training and development of future talent in the semiconductor sector. The company seeks to create new opportunities for India to play a more significant role in the global chip ecosystem, further strengthening the country's position in the industry.

The centre is expected to be situated near Applied's existing campus in Bangalore, it said.

At present, Applied Materials operates in six sites with a large organization dedicated to product development, research and development (R&D), information technology (IT), and operations.

The company has established partnerships with renowned academic institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

These collaborations have led to the establishment of a Materials Development Center focused on developing next-generation chemistry and materials for the semiconductor industry.

To establish the new centre in India, Applied Materials plans to make a gross investment of $400 million over four years. It is projected that during the center's first five years of operation, it will support over $2 billion of planned investments.

Additionally, the centre is expected to create at least 500 new advanced engineering jobs and potentially an additional 2,500 jobs within the manufacturing ecosystem.

“Applied is excited to build upon our 20 years of success in India by creating a facility where the country’s top engineers, suppliers and researchers can work side-by-side to develop new innovations,” said Prabu Raja, President of the Semiconductor Products Group at Applied Materials. “We envision Applied’s strong base of engineering talent collaborating more deeply with domestic and global companies operating in India to strengthen the foundational equipment supply chain serving the global semiconductor manufacturing industry.”
